Can I give my horse CBD? Safety and legality

If you’re interested in natural ways to support your horse’s health, you’ve probably already heard of CBD. Many people give their horses CBD as it’s a safe, legal health product.

Also known as cannabidiol, CBD is derived from hemp plants. Many people use it on a daily basis to support their health. But humans aren’t the only ones who may benefit from using CBD – animals can too. In fact, more and more vets and pet lovers swear by using CBD for dogs, cats, and horses.

Here’s what you need to know about giving CBD to your horse.

Is CBD safe for horses?

Yes. A growing body of research shows that CBD is safe for many mammals, including humans and horses.

However, as with most health products, too much CBD can cause some side effects for horses – especially fatigue and diarrhea.

To be on the safe side, start low and go slow when giving CBD to your horse. According to DailyCBD, most vets recommend starting with 40 mg of CBD for horses that weigh between 660 and 1800 lbs and 25 mg for 400 to 600 lbs horses. Gradually increase the dosage by about 5 mg per day until you get the desired effects.

It’s important to purchase CBD products from legitimate sellers. Always opt for high-quality CBD from a reputable company – your horse’s health is worth the investment.

Will CBD make my horse high?

No. CBD itself is non-intoxicating, which means it can’t make your horse high.

The compound in cannabis that makes people intoxicated is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD products tend to contain zero THC or a tiny amount of THC – far too little to make you or your horse feel high.

Is it legal to give horses CBD?

Yes!

CBD is legal throughout the United States. The 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to grow hemp in every state. It’s also legal to produce, sell, and use hemp-based CBD products. Since our CBD products for horses are hemp-based, they’re fully legal in the United States.

It’s legal to use CBD yourself, and it’s legal to give CBD to your horse, dog, or another pet.

Can I give CBD to a racehorse/competing horse?

Unfortunately, the US Equestrian Federation prohibits CBD and all other cannabinoids. As such, if your horse is competing, you’re probably not allowed to give them CBD and hemp products.

Of course, different countries and regions are governed by different sets of rules. For the most part, though, CBD is a prohibited substance. If there’s any doubt, we encourage you to double-check with the relevant authorities.

However, you can give CBD to horses that do not compete in official events. CBD is especially popular for helping retired horses as well as horses with special needs and health conditions, but it’s also great for supporting the health of noncompeting pets!

Boosting your horse’s wellness routine with CBD

A legal and safe substance, CBD can be used for humans as well as dogs, cats, and horses. You can give CBD to horses as long as they’re not competing in an event where CBD is banned. Always opt for high-quality CBD products. For best results, give CBD to your horse on a daily basis.
